Grilling Safety Tips

The month of May is National BBQ Month! Soon, the familiar smell of propane, charcoal and sizzling meats will waft through the air signaling the arrival of summer. But before you reach for those burgers, consider these grilling safety tips to ensure safe summer cookouts:
Proper Use and Cleaning
After hauling your grill out from storage, be sure to always inspect it before firing it up! Make certain everything is still in good condition and not damaged from any kind of exposure during the colder months. Remember to clean your grill grate after each use and examine it to make sure no cleaning bristles are left behind. A grill frame remains hot up to an hour after use, so also make sure there are no nearby activities going on that could result in injury. Watch your distance!
Always use your grill in an outdoor, well-ventilated area! Grills are designed for outdoor use only to prevent the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure that your grill is away from your home, any overhead surfaces such as a garage or any natural debris such as dry leaves or brush. Lastly, if it's windy, try and steer the grill to face the opposite direction to avoid injury or fires from wind-blown sparks.
Have the Right Tools
When grilling out, it can be tempting to start cooking then walk away to grab something. This is hazardous. Instead, make sure to keep everything you need for proper cooking, cleaning and emergency situations nearby. Always use rust-free long-handled utensils to avoid burns and splatters. Keep platters nearby for when your food is finished. In case of large flare-ups, wear flame-retardant mitts, adjust the heat and keep a water source nearby to douse the flames.
